Molnija Pearl

A Molnija (read: MOL-nee-yah) pocket watch from my collection.



I have it with an original paper box plus documents where it says that the date of production was some time in September 2001 but no chain to hook it to a trouser belt or something. And I bought it as new old stock (BNIB) some time in 2013.


This one is in a hunter case (with lid/duster) and the design is called Pearl.



I think you can see some pearl related motiffs. Though at first I didn't know that it was officially so called and thought it was related to something agricultural and mistook the "pearl" on the lid for some root vegetable.



The dial also continues to explore the Pearl theme, with the yellow circle at 12 o'clock also apparently representing a pearl and the dial in two shades of blue -- the color of the ocean.

On the back there's a generic Molnija ornament.

The cal. 3602 movement in its 2000s version -- yellow plates (brass?), no central stone, other simplifications, no decoration, rough machining.




Watch collectors don't have much respect for the Molnija movements of this particular vintage believing them somehow to be inferior to Molnija movements of almost every other period but, whether true or not, I don't share this snobbery.
If anything, in this guise, they look even more like their Corterbert ancestors. Compare.

The Seiko Prospex Alpinist SBEB013 is my first solar, digital display and ABC (Altimeter, Barometer & Compass) watch from the Seiko family. It is also the third ABC (Altimeter, Barometer & Compass) multi-sensor watch in my collection. I already have the Casio Protrek as well as the Tissot T-Touch. It would be interesting to note the differences in functionality as well as capabilities of the various makes. I will make such a comparison in a special box section later in this review.

It is difficult to get an example of this watch in Kuala Lumpur as Seiko does not officially offer this model here in Malaysia. Through the internet, via Amazon, I was able to source one from a merchant operating out of Japan. Within a week, the package was on my table.

The Packaging

The SBEB013 comes with a quality double cardboard box package. The outer box uses a thinner cardboard material painted in black with the brand logo as well as the Prospex logo on the top of the box in silver. The dimension of the outer box is 12 cm by 9 cm by 8 cm. Inside this box contains the main watch box as well as the manual, warranty and a special instruction booklet on how to resize the bracelet. Included also is a tool for the bracelet resizing. This is a first time I’ve seen Seiko give a resizing tool as part of the presentation package.

Orient lancierte die Version 4 im ersten Halbjahr 2016 und läutete die vierte Ausgabe der klassischen Bambino-Kollektion von Orient ein. Es ist das erste Bambino-Modell, das das neue Automatik-Modell Oriental Calibre F67 verwendet. Es hat auch eine Reihe von Änderungen gegenüber früheren Modellen.

Der charakteristische gewölbte Kristall ist immer noch da. Im Gegensatz zu den Vorgängermodellen sind die Stundenmarkierungen jedoch abgerundet und rautenförmig. Die Hände sind viel dünner und der Sekundenzeiger ist rot lackiert. Es ist auch etwas größer, von der vorherigen Norm von 40,5 mm Breite bei früheren Versionen bis zu 41,5 mm breit in dieser neuesten Iteration. Gleichzeitig haben sich die Laschen auch weiter zu einem generischen 22 mm von den vorherigen 21 mm verschoben. Inzwischen liegt die Dicke bei 11,8 mm.

Welcome to the latest Second Time Round blog article. Today we are looking at luxury watch manufacturer Jaeger Le Coultre. The story began in 1833 when Antoine LeCoultre founded his workshop in Le Sentier, from which he manufactured watch gearing with his brother Ulysse. Specialising in metallurgy and gear-mechanisms Antoione created the Millionometer in 1844 which was the first instrument capable of measuring components to one millionth of a metre. 3 years later in 1847 LeCoultre created a revolutionary ‘push-piece mechanism’ for rewinding and setting the time on watches, a process which had previously relied on keys to perform this task.

Following on from his father’s work Elie LeCoultre recognised the need to control all aspects of the manufacturing and assembly so he expanded his workshop into a watchmaking factory (a ‘manufacture’).
